About the Daisy Appeal
Why is there a need?
Some Health Facts
Cancer and heart disease are the two biggest killers in Hull & East Yorkshire. In fact, it is well documented that the general health statistics for Hull are not very favourable. Specifically, 450 men in every 100,000 in Hull, aged between 65 and 74, died of lung cancer between 2001 and 2003. For women of the same age group, 292 in every 100,000 died of lung cancer in the same period.
Hull has an above average number of smokers and higher than average death rates from heart disease, although the figures are falling.
How the Daisy Appeal Will Help
The Daisy Appeal will directly raise funds for the research and clinical trials centre, the first for the region. This centre will initially look into heart disease and cancer and as the centre develops will encompass other specialties as time goes on creating a Centre of Excellence in Medical Research.
So far there is no such dedicated facility available in the region. The provision of a clinical trials facility locally means that patients will be exposed to new drugs and treatments at a far earlier time than they would otherwise have been.
Clinical trials mean that patients who fit certain criteria for the trial itself and who agree to be a part of it, will be treated at the new centre. It is proven that trials and specialist research help to increase survival rates and naturally boost future survival rates from life-threatening diseases.
