Alan Johnson
Born in May 1950, Alan Johnson was educated at Sloane Grammar School, Chelsea. He became a postman in London in 1968 and at the same time joined the Union of Communication Workers. Alan worked his way through the ranks and in 1987 became a full-time Officer of the UCW, mainly responsible for national negotiations on behalf of 100,000 postal, delivery and sorting staff. He became the youngest General Secretary in the history of the UCW when he was elected to the post in January 1992.
Following his succesful carreer at the UCW he ran for and was elected Labour MP for Kingston upon Hull West and Hessle on 1st May 1997, and made his maiden speech about several important local issues. He has steadily worked his way up through the political ladder, including notable positions at the Department for Trade and Industry, as well as being Minister of State for Lifelong Learning, Higher and Further Education at the Department for Education and Skills.
The Prime Minister announced a major reshuffle to his cabinet on Friday 5th May 2006. This reshuffle brought about another promotion for Alan Johnson. He is now the Secretary of State for Health.
Alan is a great supporter and champion of local issues affecting East Yorkshire and The Humber. His work with the Daisy Appeal is also
mirrored in work toward education, fairness at work, and fisherman's compensation.
